More Than Just A Time Machine: The DeLorean DMC-12

by Rob Taylor on October 22, 2009

Yes. A DeLorean monster truck.

Yes. A DeLorean monster truck.

It’s no secret that I harbour an undying (and perhaps unhealthly) admiration for the 1981 “sports” car, the DeLorean DMC-12. Star of the 1984 classic Back to the Future, and many of my childhood (and adult) dreams, the DMC-12 is an instantly recognisable cultural icon.

It’s true that they don’t go very fast, and that they are not strictly the most beautiful of cars, but still, they have a special place in my heart. So now you’ve got the background, you should be able to see why I thought it’d be a cracking idea to bring together all the weird and wonderful DeLoreans that I have found on my travels across the interwebs. Some of these are pretty awesome (case in point, the photo to the left), and others are downright upsetting (a smashed DeLorean will always bring a tear to my eye).

So without further ado, let’s take a look at some the most weird and wonderful DeLoreans from across the world…

The Golden DeLorean

Let’s start with a ‘good’ one, simply because a lot of these are hideous. I use the word ‘good’ very loosely. This is one of two gold-plated DeLoreans. The original plan was to make one thousand of them; however only two rolled off the production line in late 1981. Bear in mind that this isn’t just gold leaf or gold-effect coating, this is bonafide 24-carat gold. I think it’s safe to say this’d be an insurance nightmare.

A man named Rich W from this website discovered the following equation: DeLorean + hovercraft = awesome. He then came up with this little beauty. Congratulations, sir. Congratulations.

The one thing that bugs me about this one is that they clearly had to completely destroy an actual DeLorean in the process. Having said that, the projects that Rich W works on actually aim to preserve DeLoreans that were already destined for the scrapyard, so good on him!

Ok, so this one isn’t necessarily weird, but it certainly is wonderful. A bog standard DeLorean, minus the run-of-the-mill stainless steel finish and plus a sleek black one.

As far as I’m aware, it’s not actually possible to paint a DeLorean directly – the paint’ll just drip right off – so a job like this must be the work of vinyl decals. Anyone can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. The point is it looks stylish as hell. Do want.

The Monster Truck DeLorean

You saw it up top, you wanted to know more. This is another work of art from our favourite DeLorean enthusiast Rich W. Where would DeLoreans be without this guy? This monster truck DeLorean is actually known as the D Rex, and you can see why. Wouldn’t want to meet this thing coming the wrong way down a one-way street.

There are also some terrible images across the internet of DeLoreans which have fallen victim to road traffic accidents; unfortunately I simply can’t bring myself to post them here. They’re out there if you really want to see them.

A big thanks to The Projects of Rich W for the beef of this article. He’s currently working on a convertible and limo DeLorean.

You are my hero, sir, and I salute you.

And here I was thinking it was just a crap-looking piece of steel that was in a movie that one time. You’ve shown me another side of Deloreans!
